Measuring Necks

I started my second sweet top and decided to trust the template, therefore use the one size hook. While my guage was spot on the 5" for the back of the neck looked very very tiny. So while ironing I got my trusty tape measure out and started measuring the neck on my tops and shirts. Only to find out it really should have been 7". I then measured my CAL Top and because I used a larger hook for the neck section it was 7". So the moral of the story is don't let your husband do the measuring, measure your favourite top instead. So here is looking forward to doing the lace edge version next in lovely 4ply green cotton.

This is my finished crochet along top. Sweet isnt it! I wore it today and recieved quite a few compliments which was very nice. I have already raided my stash looking for the next project to try. The Purple necklace I made this afternoon just because I was on a roll. Next time I dont think I will be using the largest size hook. I used a 6mm on the top/sleeve section. A 5.5mm from the join in the V then a 5mm just as it went over my boobs. I will trust the template. Thank you to Amy for creating something so nice. I still can not get over the fact that you only measure the back of your neck and it fits!!!!

As you can see the top is really starting to take shape now. I have done an extra decrease under the arm on both sides but that was all it took to pull it in, plus this cotton is reasonably heavy the drape is nice.

My lovely 6yr old took this picture for me, and I really must start wearing makeup if I am going to post my photo, but who has time. Ok I made the deeper V. Made my arm holes too big ripped out a few rows, so that is sorted. I am a little concerned about the back but we do have to go over the boobs yet, so am not to concerned yet....determined not to rip out any more. PS. Hello to the other Dawn

The handbag is based on a booga bag. This is my first attempt but I need to make it larger to be of any real use. I'd love to say the necklace was my idea but no, This is one of Jenny Kings designs. An Australian crochet queen. I think the pillow does it more justice than my self portrait.

This is for Rebecca. What I did my gauge was 4 the back of my neck was five. That made A to be 20. divide by 3, B=7 multiply by 2, C=14, add 20 + 14, D=34 + 6, E= 40. that number of stitches will not fit over your head and it is not supposed to. It wont fit over your head until you get to the bottom of the V. You are making the back and over the shoulder. So it does not join together until the V is done. Hope that helps.

My first attempt and thankfully you get to try on as you go was so tiny it would not go over my head. Much to shameful for photo. Figured out I had a problem with my maths, don't leave out the .25 round the numbers up. Second attempt much better but will still be ripped out because not happy with the depth of the V. I think I know what to do, however will wait for instructions to save on ripping out. I am using a cotton called Antilles by Anny Blatt. That I picked up in a garage sale at least 10yrs ago. Never knew what to do with it, until last year I did a course on how to knit a jumper without a pattern and did one for my daughter. So the rest is to be used on how to crochet a top but this time for me. I am using a size 6 hook, only because I have a big head and need all the ease I can get and then I had a ah ah moment this morning when I woke up and thought about what was written on the pattern about Julie's version and will reduce needle size in the same manner.

Both beanies are done in Patons Inca wool and have matching scarves, and I finally get to keep a hat, lucky for me I have a big head and it doesnt fit to many people. I will photograph the matching bag very shortly.

Had to have a go at doing a matching Handbag. Not entirely happy with this. The handles were crotched on to start with. Had to cut them off after the felting. So have made a pattern change for the next one.

This one came out more like a Noosa Hat on the brim much flatter with just a turn up on the edge. Really don't know why its just the way it came out of the machine.

This one I made smaller by leaving 2 Shell rows out of the depth. Not really necessary. If you want to make it smaller its better to leave a row out of the crown. Also I got the brim to roll by not decreasing on the first row of dc. and only on the last three.

This is one of those large rectangles that you join short edge to long edge if you get my drift. I liked it on Bron but it didn't do a thing for me. Have found another pattern of the lion web site. The one Martha Stewart wore home from prison! It looks really nice and more shapely.

The first felt hat

This hat is where I found I did not need to decrease on all four rows at the end. The brim folded over in half dead flat. Still nice just different. If I was to purposely do this again I would make the brim a little larger.

Recycled Bag

This turned out to be quite niffty. I have sent it to my mum, along with the pattern for the C W A ladies. I thought they might get a kick out of making a bag from plastic bags. How's that for recycling

This magazine is really worth looking at. It has great patterns, good articles and interesting web sites to have a look at. I have done a few things out of it which as yet I am to take any pictures of, but I will do soon. Have a look at www.soysilk.com it has some nice free patterns.

This is knitted on 24 gauge jewellery wire and threading the beads on first. I think it was 8 stitches and size 4 or 4.5 needles, that depends on the size of the beads. I saw this at the craft show. If you do one, don't forget to allow for the jewellery findings, mine is a little to long.

While browsing through a knitting magazine I found this article on Knit One, Blog One and I thought what a good idea. I have friends all over the place and we are always looking for a new way to communicate our craft ideas and here was a way to share a space to do it. So here we go. In 2003 I attended a craft show and learned how to knit without a pattern that was fabulous however when knitting for a child do not add a 4 inch ease, much to big, thank god for my dress maker friend and her overlocker. In 2004 I attended Prudence Mapstones Freeform Knitting class to make a handbag, the two classes together have given me so much more confidence to do what I think will work and I am starting to select wool/fibre without worrying about patterns. It has rekindled an old passion. When I figure out how to post a photo I will do it.
